Making homemade ornaments is such a big part of our Christmas tradition every year! The kids love looking at the tree and seeing something that they created themselves. I love this ornament because it's something that even my youngest kids can create with little assistance. Over the years, we have made so many ornaments that my kids now each have a small tree in their rooms for all their handmade creations! As always, please be careful when working with very small pieces and children who may still put things in their mouths.

How We Did It

Button Snowflake Ornaments

Gather all materials. Since we used colored Popsicle sticks, we didn't use the paints, but you could easily paint regular Popsicle sticks for a similar effect. We used colorful buttons to make our ornaments more fun for the kids.

My four-year-old used the tacky glue to glue his Popsicle sticks in a snowflake shape. The tacky glue was a little harder to squeeze out, so I had to lend a hand with this part.

Then he carefully dotted the Elmer's glue on his sticks and placed his buttons. This was great fine motor skills practice and kept him busy long enough for me to start dinner! Before he could start placing the buttons, he had to get them "in order," which included separating them by colors, lining them up in rows, and making various shapes out of them. (Tip: Protect your workspace with some paper towels!)

After the buttons dried, we used the tacky glue to attach the ribbon in a loop on the back to hang on our tree. The kids always love to see their homemade ornaments on the tree so we try to make a few each year.

He was so proud of his ornament and it was a super simple project that he was able to finish with very little help from me!
