Get into the holiday spirit with this wonderful candy cane-themed play dough. Scented with peppermint oil, this dough smells just like a real candy cane.
Gather all your ingredients and find a big surface to work on. We use a stool or bar chair for the kids to sit on when helping. This way we are all at the same level and everything stays contained to the counter while cooking.
Start by adding the dry ingredients to a large bowl. I have my children do this step. Once the flour, salt, and cream of tartar are in the bow,l it's time for the grown-up to take over the bowl while adding the hot water, cooking oil, and peppermint oil. Mix until cool and a ball starts to form.
When the dough has cooled, I always give the kids a turn to stir before we pull out the dough to start kneading. I'm not sure what my kids like better; making the play dough or playing with it when it is done. We make play dough most every week. It's a lot of fun to experiment with different recipes.
Knead and divide the dough. If the dough feels too sticky, you may need to add a touch more flour. Next take one portion of the dough and add a few drops of food color to the center. Knead the dough again until you are left with red dough.
