Staring at my lovely fall chrysanthemums the other day, I had a thought: We should paint with these! Yes, I know, I'm silly like that, but my kids love painting and are always game for exploring new projects. The messier the better, they say!

As it turned out, the chrysanthemum paintbrushes made beautiful patterns...

How We Did It

Chrysanthemum Paintbrushes
I told my kids to grab their scissors and follow me outside. They were thrilled to be allowed to cut some of the potted chrysanthemums on our porch. (We usually have a no-pick rule on the potted flowers on the porch.)

Next, we assembled our supplies.

Then they chose the paint colors they wanted to use.

Ready, set, paint! They experimented with different techniques: dabbing, swirling, dragging.

Some of the flowers began to fall apart a bit and the petals stuck in the paint. We thought this looked beautiful and added a nice texture to our paintings.

Here are some of the paintings they created. My daughter did a series of rainbow paintings.

My 22-year-old niece came along while we were doing this project and she wanted in on the fun. She made this pretty flower. Isn't it lovely? We all oohed and aahed over it. It's fun when cousins do art projects with us.
