Hot rocks is one of our new favorite activities to do. My friend shared a very peaceful hot rock tutorial video with us and we were hooked. We decided with Earth Day coming up we would use blue and green crayons to create our own little earth.
How We Did It
We started this craft out by taking a little walk and collecting some stones and rocks. We brought them back home and the kids helped me to wash them all off. I pre-heated the oven to 300 degrees. Next, we placed the rocks on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and put them in the oven to warm, about 8 minutes.
My children have done this craft several times and they know the rules. They do not touch the rocks, only I do. Using a towel I placed a rock onto a cloth napkin for each child. The kids draw right on the hot rocks and are amazed how beautiful the crayon melts all over the rocks.
They dry pretty quickly and are just stunning. We like to place our beautiful hot rocks back into nature for people to find.
(Please be sure to only do hot rocks with total adult supervision.)
