I love creating anything involving preserving my little ones' hand prints or fingerprints. There is a great quote by an anonymous writer that says, "This is to remind you when I have grown so tall, that once I was quite little and my hands were very small." This wonderful activity is fun, with very little ingredients involved, to preserve those little memories.

How We Did It

Fingerprint Tree

Print out the fall tree printable on cardstock. (My daughter V is so funny--she loves when I make printables. Once she hears the printer making noises, she runs to the printer knowing something fun is going to shoot out for her to make.)

Next, have your child squirt the paint colors onto the paper plate or dish. This may involve a small mess, so you may want to put out a paper bag to protect your workspace. V got a little carried away with the finger paint squirting process!

Once the finger paints are contained, have your little one swirl around the paint to create a colorful mixture. By using the mixture as the leaves, it will bring lots of colors onto to each fingerprint leaf, creating a more natural effect.

Next, have them dab their fingers on the tree branches creating fall leaves. Repeat this until all the branches are filled with leaves on your tree.

Let the paint dry, then (if you'd like), write your child's name, date, and age to commemorate the picture.

We printed out, painted, and framed two of these fall fingerprint trees--one for each set of grandparents.

For a spring card we used green leaves and dotted it with pink and white as blossom. We used 3 year olds arm and hand prints for trunk and branches. Was going to make it into a card for Grandma but its so fab we're going to frame it for her and make another card!

My daughter did this one year when I went to an art walk in my town. The only thing that she did differently was that the trunk and the branches were her hand and part of her arm.
