Flour + Baby Oil = Cloud Dough

Flour + Baby Oil = Cloud Dough

The name of this dough fascinated O. The ease of making it fascinated me. Just mix baby oil and flour in a 1:8 ratio-- we used 1/4 cup baby oil and 2 cups flour--and you have cloud dough! It looks like flour, but it holds its shape when pressed.

What You'll Need

How We Did It

O's reaction to getting his hands in the stuff.

He could make handprints that stayed in the dough, which he loved.

Next we experimented with a waffle rolling pin toy.

This is O, so of course a truck had to be involved. We made tire tracks.

Flour + Baby Oil = Cloud Dough
O decided this was "snow dough" and we made snow balls! Perfect for a hot summer day. I'll admit there is a bit of a mess to clean up afterward, but the fun of squishing this dough (even for me) was worth it! I think I'll try this outside in a larger container next time for extra squishing.

My child and I completed Flour + Baby Oil = Cloud Dough. We didn't have baby oil in the house, so I used canola oil and it came out great!

Our 3 1/2 yr. old thoroughly enjoys cloud dough! I put it in a plastic container that could easily sit on our kitchen table. We played with his mini CAT construction vehicles, and pretended that we were moving big snow piles and making roads with the mini paver. We also covered each other's hands with it. He thought that was fun, especially when I'd ask where his hands had gone; he'd break out from under the cloud. :) It's relaxing (yes, and messy), but not a difficult mess to clean up. Kept his attention even when I wasn't with him. Thanks for the idea!

Lots of fun and easy. We used plain canola oil bc our DS is a thumb sucker

I am so going to have to try this with my 2.5 year old boy. I believe he will truly enjoy it, though I believe we will be doing it outside! :D Thanks!

My child and I completed Flour + Baby Oil = Cloud Dough. Messy, but my 3.5 yr old loves it. I give her muffin tins, measuring cups and a cake pan and she pretends to make cake and cupcakes with it. I used the baby oil gel since that is what I had, the cocoa butter kind, and it smells DELICIOUS :)

We have tried this in the preschool and the kids love it although I caution you to research the dangers of inhaling baby oil... (the "flingability" of this medium makes inhalation something to be aware of) So we opted for regular salad oil and it worked fine. We added cups, spoons and scoopers the first day. Toy trucks and little people the next day. The flour did get caked into the truck's parts and required some whacking to dislodge it. We tried it indoors but it got very slippery on the floor where it spilled so we moved it to the grass. Loads of fun.

I tried this today. It seemed like there was not enough baby oil and I kept having to stop to add more..However, my child is still playing 30 minutes later so I would say this was a great idea. Thank you!
