Here's some winter fun that can be made entirely by the kids... building + painting = creativity--and lots of fun!

How We Did It

Ice Towers

This is one of my kids' favorite wintertime projects... the only things we we need are winter and paint, and they're off--sometimes busy for an hour or more! Plastic bowls, cups, and Popsicle molds all make excellent containers.

Ice Towers
My only involvement in this project is getting out the bowls and then filling up the water pitcher... my children know what to do!
Ice Towers

You could use food coloring for this project if you like, but watercolor paints work just fine--and they're often washable. If you don't have watercolors, just choose a washable paint and water it down.

Ice Towers
My children love mixing colors and discovering new ones.... some they mix, and some they leave alone and let set (to see what happens)...
Ice Towers
When the colors are done, I put them on a tray (sometimes they're very, very full!) and carry them outside, putting them out in the cold.
Ice Towers
First thing the next morning they get checked on... they're frozen! And ready for play.
Ice Towers

We put a towel on the table and a tray on top. Maddie fetches some snow from outside, and then we get out the paints...

Ice Towers

...and penguins, rabbits, dinosaurs, and other animals, and the kids set up an icy animal kingdom.

Ice Towers
Painted crystal caves, snowshoe hare dens, polar bear glaciers.... it's all wonder and wander in this snowy, icy land!
