We made place cards for Thanksgiving dinner. It was an excuse for us to do a pinecone search outdoors, recycle our egg carton, and work on our cutting, gluing, and writing skills. It is fun to do and there will be no confusion as to where to sit at the dinner table!

What You'll Need

  • egg carton - One cell for each head. I suggest cardboard material instead of foam.
  • pine cone
  • foam sheets (3 for each place card) - orange, green, red

How We Did It

Mister Turkey Place Card

To make our Mister Turkey place card, we first got together all our supplies.

My four-year-old didn't like the yellow of the egg carton, so she painted the egg carton cell brown. Then she glued on the googly eyes. I cut the red foam into a shape of a caruncle (the reddish flesh that hangs on the turkey's neck), then she glued the red foam. We left the head to dry while we moved on to the next steps. While your kiddo's working on the next several steps, you can bring out the glue gun and glue the pine cone under the head. This will be Mister Turkey's body.

On the green and orange foam, have your kid trace their hand...

...then cut the traced hand print. This will give your little one practice cutting round and sharp edges.

Add glue to the bottom part of the hand print and glue one on top of the other. Make sure the prints overlap, so that you can see all three colors. I told my daughter to make sure that the green fingers show behind the orange fingers. This will later become Mister Turkey's tail and having more colors will make a very festive turkey!

Speaking of colors, the next step is to paint thumbprints on the handprints using red and yellow paint. Let this dry. While your kid is doing the next step, bring out the glue gun and glue Mister turkey's head to its tail (foam hand prints).

Since this is a place card, have your kid cut a square or rectangle shape on a construction paper. (My daughter proudly wrote her own name.) Stick the name card between the fingers of the foam hand print.

Ta-da! One is done. We have 9 more to go for Thanksgiving dinner. This way, there will be no confusion on seating arrangement! Happy Turkey Day!
