Rainy days call for more involved projects and special materials. My kids look forward to these days so we can pull out supplies that we don't get to use all the time. These rainy day creations were the perfect chance to use our oil pastels and watercolor paints! The bright colors almost made us forget how dreary it was outside!

How We Did It

Rainy Day Painting

Gather all materials. I just love the vibrant pictures that the oil pastels create for this art project! My kids love using them and consider them a "special treat," perfect for rainy day fun.

Rainy Day Painting

The kids used the oil pastels to draw pictures on their construction paper. They added grass, clouds, a sun, and spring flowers. My 4-year-old and 8-year-old even added themselves to their pictures. It was so much fun to hear them making up stories that went along with their pictures.

After they finished drawing, the kids used the watercolor paints to add details and create "rain" for their pictures. I just loved how creative they were with the watercolors. Some of them used the paints to fill in their drawings, while others just filled in the backgrounds of their pictures.

While the pictures were drying, we created umbrellas by folding a cupcake liner in half and gluing it together. This was a great way to use up our leftover cupcake liners from various holidays and birthdays. Each of the kids got to pick their own style.

The kids glued their umbrellas onto their pictures to finish off our multi-media creations. They were so excited to show off their projects!
