How We Did It

Rubber Duck Reading Games
I don't know about you, but we've built up quite the collection of rubber ducks and other floating animals at my house. I decided it was time to put them to use in a few learning games. If you don't have any of these on hand, they can be found at dollar stores for a great price. Fill up a large container, sand table, baby pool, or even a sink with water and dump the animals in to begin.

I wrote a letter of her name on each of the animals and left the rest blank. Her job was to hunt through the animals to find the letters of her name. For an extra challenge, encourage your child to find them in order.

Pure excitement whenever she found one!

After she found them all, I encouraged her to put them in order.

Other ways to play:

  • Identify the color of the animal you pick.
  • Put the letters of the alphabet on the bottom and say the letter sound that is on the animal you pick.
  • Write numbers on the bottom of the animals. Pick a duck and identify the number or for a challenge pick two ducks and add them together (or even subtract them).
  • You can also pick a numbered duck and say the number that comes after (one more than) the number you picked.
  • Hunt for a duck that shows your age.
  • Write sight words or words from your child's reading list on the ducks to put a fun twist on having to practice them each week.
