Story Wheel

Story Wheel

Storytime is one of the most special times I have with my kids. I love sitting with them and their wonderful imaginations and making stories up together. When my five-year-old asked to make a story spinner, I asked a lot of questions to figure out exactly what she wanted to make. We came up with this together. It's sort of a take-off point to our stories. We made this with a foam board and markers and it has become a favorite way to spend an evening as a family.

What You'll Need

How We Did It

Story Wheel

First, draw a large (about 12-18") circle on the foam board. We used a large mixing bowl to trace our circle. Then draw lines to divide the circle into eight equal sections. Next, draw an arrow just a little smaller then the circle. (I just did this free-hand; it doesn't have to be perfect.)

Once you have your circle and arrow drawn on the foam board, it's time for the fun part. We sat and talked about different things that we like to tell stories about and drew a picture for each in our circle. This was so fun to sit with my daughter and talk about wonderful magical stories. It's pretty amazing what a five-year-old dreams up!

Story Wheel

After the wheel and arrow are full of color, it's time for a grownup to cut out the two pieces! I used an X-Acto knife but, depending on how thick your board is, you may be able to use scissors.

Story Wheel

Cut a small X in both the center of the circle and the edge of the arrow. Then use a brad (a.k.a. paper fastener) to attach the two pieces together.

Now it's story time!

Some nights my children like to hear a story and other nights they like to tell stories. This wheel gives a jumping point and you never know where the story will go from the story spinner. Stories are such a good way for children to express feelings. This story wheel has helped us get through a big move and continues to be a place for our family to gather and spend time together. Love it!
