Tie dyeing is a fun way to give new life to a faded old t-shirt, a dingy bag, or mismatched socks, while exploring different color combinations and patterns.
Gather your materials. Tie dyeing is messy, so be sure to protect your work space! You can use newspaper or paper bags.
For the most common tie dye pattern, start by pinching your fabric in the center and twisting it up until it's gathered into a circle. Using pipe cleaners, tie off the fabric into sections--like a pie!
Experiment with other designs. For a polka dot pattern, pinch the fabric in several places and tie each "dots" with pipe cleaners. For stripes, fold the fabric accordion style and tie sections with pipe cleaners.
What other designs can you make? (Note: always wash the tie dyed fabric separately to avoid staining other items.)
