Create beautiful fall leaves using liquid watercolors and coffee filters.

What You'll Need

How We Did It

Watercolor Leaves
To create a leaf template, draw different kinds of leaves freehand or find some you like on the web and print them out.
Watercolor Leaves
Trace the leaves onto coffee filters and cut them out. Prepare as many leaves as you like and as many different kinds as you like. We used brown coffee filters because that was what was available in our area. White coffee filters are fine as well.
Watercolor Leaves
Prepare the colors by mixing 1/4 teaspoon of liquid water color with 1/4 to 1/2 cup of water. Add more liquid watercolor paint if the colors are too light.
Watercolor Leaves
Place the leaves on a piece of white paper in your child's work area.
Watercolor Leaves
Provide one plastic dropper for each color.
Watercolor Leaves

Have your child use the droppers to pick up the watercolors and drop them onto the leaves.

Watercolor Leaves
Allow the leaves to dry on wax paper.
Watercolor Leaves
After the leaves are dry and have been removed from the wax paper, notice the leaves left behind! These look great framed with some black paper and hung in the window.
Watercolor Leaves

The leaves are now done! Use them to decorate your home, make a wreath, have a leaf fight, or hide them around the house for a leaf hunt. They are also great for sending short notes to family and friends.

These are so simple and pretty. We're going to make these and scatter around our dinner table for Thanksgiving. Thanks for the idea, Stephanie!
