Wrapping Paper Snowflakes
Cutting snowflakes is a yearly tradition in our home. Preschooler's just learning to cut (well) love it! Providing them with different materials to cut makes it even more fascinating to them.
Save the paper after opening gifts and reuse that for these snowflakes! Wrapping paper is perfect for preschoolers. Its easy to cut. And the coolest part is that you can make huge snowflakes with them. Which also makes it easier for young hands to cut because they're not cutting out such small spaces.
What You'll Need
- wrapping paper - Cut into squares
- scissors
How We Did It
Fold the square piece of wrapping paper in half to make a triangle (opposite corners together). Fold in half again. And again one more time. This will give you an 8-pointed snowflake. To do a 6-pointed snowflake, instead of folding in half the last time, fold in thirds. I chose to the the 8-pointed snowflake because its easier to fold and easier to cut for my preschooler.
Draw a design to cut. I find that its easier to give young cutters a guide to follow. For older kids, let them make their own design (by drawing it first, or cutting freehand!). Straight and long lines work best for preschoolers. Make curvy lines for older kids! Tip: Be sure to leave enough space between lines in case they cut too far past the line.
Open up your snowflake to see your pretty creation and hang on a window. Depending on the stiffness of the wrapping paper, you could hang it from the ceiling too! Our wrapping paper was a little flimsy, so I taped them to the windows.
