Zoo Scavenger Hunt
One of my first purchases when I officially became a stay-at-home mom was a family pass to the city zoo. Hands down, it's one of our favorite places to spend a morning together. When my boys and I were meeting up with friends there a little while back, I decided to add a little surprise to our otherwise normal play date: a scavenger hunt.
How We Did It
Most of the work for this project occurred before our play date. First, I jumped onto the computer and visited the National Geographic Kids' site. They have fabulous free printables of animals. I printed and cut out five animals that could be found at our local zoo. Then I laminated each of the photos and punched a hole in the upper left-hand corner. That's where I inserted a bent paper clip to hold them all together. (A clip ring would have worked much better but I couldn't find one in our stash.)
On the morning of our play date, I handed the ring of photos to the boys and invited them to pick an animal to hunt for first. Their choice? Penguins. Since we're frequent visitors of the zoo, they knew just where to find them. The two older boys took off running.
You can imagine the excitement of finding the first animal on their list. The boys watched the penguins for a few seconds and then excitedly picked the next animal to find: bears.
My little prep ahead of time paid off big time. The boys loved every minute of the hunt--and they burned off a little extra energy too. We will definitely be playing this again.
