Subscription boxes for kids have been around for some time, too, and a few of them are great. We especially love the Kiwi Crate line, which delivers age-appropriate science, art, and engineering projects that get kids interested and teach them valuable problem-solving skills.

I want whatever my kids play with to be intentionally educational but also fun. After all, play time is always learning time. Kids are always learning. Therefore I like games, toys, and gadgets that inspire cooperation, reflection, and critical thinking.

[Kiwi Crate’s Sandra Oh Lin on Starting a Small Business] Create an incredible and passionate team who are committed to the product. As part of our extended team and design process, we’ve added creative parents who dream up the projects, valued experts who review them, and a community of kid testers who keep us on our toes and ensure the projects are fun and engaging.

Each box contains new, interesting materials for building that month’s project. Each project allows plenty of room for personal creativity, too. This is an updated art box for crafty kids that mimics hands on experiences they might have at museums or in the classroom.

Open-ended kits are ideal, but even kits that steer you towards a particular end product are useful if they encourage the child to extend their play once the first goal is reached, or inspire you to keep going using your own materials.

I always encourage women to build their networks. Those lunches and meetings that you go to and the connections that you make can become relationships that pay dividends down the road. And sometimes you need that person to lend credibility to a potential introduction.

About Us

We want to inspire kids to see themselves as scientists, artists, creators, and makers—not just consumers! Each month, projects are delivered to doors across the U.S. and Canada to spark creativity, tinkering, and a deep curiosity in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math).

Our mission is to encourage the next generation of tinkerers, creators and innovators to build the creative problem-solving skills needed to succeed in life. We know exposure to STEAM is key to creative problem solving, a foundation for critical thinkers, and a pipeline to innovation.
